The project
A soaking tub directly under the window.
A Riverside master bathroom with a soaking tub directly in front of the window. The homeowners wanted a clean white look that would tolerate the daily steam without warping or yellowing. We specified waterproof poly shutters in 2.5 inch louvers, sized small to maintain the bathroom's intimate scale, with a matte finish to avoid the harsh reflection a high-gloss would produce off the tub.
What we installed
Three details that made the install.
Waterproof poly shutters
Specifically rated for high-humidity bathroom environments; no warp, no yellowing, easy steam cleaning.
2.5 inch louvers
Smaller louver suits the bathroom's intimate scale; wider would have read as overscale next to the tub.
Matte white finish
Avoids the harsh reflection a gloss finish would throw off the tub's water surface during bath time.
The decision behind it
A tub under the window sets every other decision.
Steam rises straight into this opening every single day. That is why the room got waterproof poly instead of any wood at all, and why the finish is matte: a gloss panel directly above a filled tub throws a hard reflection back at whoever is in it.
The 2.5 inch louver was deliberate too. A bathroom this size loses its intimacy under a wide louver, and the narrower slat gives finer tilt control for privacy from the street side. Poly carries a 25-year frame warranty and a lifetime warranty on the tilt mechanism. The material comparison is on our plantation shutters page, and we work right across Riverside and the Dunwoody Club side of the north metro.
