What arches and palladiums actually are

The shutters for the windows nobody else will touch.

Arched and palladium custom shutters are plantation shutters built for the curved-top windows that standard rectangular shutter inventory cannot fit. They live above the entry doors of Buckhead Georgians, on the gabled fronts of Druid Hills four-squares, at the top of Newnan Italianate front elevations, and above the picture windows of Marietta Square Victorians. They require hand-templating on site because the as-built arch is almost never the exact spec arch the builder drew. We have been measuring and installing custom-shape shutters since 1996, and we have done the arches that other installers turned down.

The questions people search for: how much do arched shutters cost, can you put shutters on a palladium window, do arched shutters open, what is a sunburst shutter, half-round shutter cost. Short answers: custom shapes add 15 to 35 percent over the standard rectangular shutter price. Yes, palladium windows take custom shutters when hand-templated. Standard sunburst arches are fixed with tilting louvers; full-radius and half-round can be hinged if the wall has clearance. A sunburst shutter has louvers radiating from a center point. Half-round shutters run $1,200 to $2,400 per opening in basswood depending on diameter.

The right way to spec an arched shutter is to bring template paper to the in-home consult and hand-trace the arch on the spot. We have used this method since 1996 because builder drawings are seldom what was actually framed. Book the free in-home measure.

Shapes and options

What you pick from at the consult.

Sunburst Arch

Louvers radiate from a center point at the bottom of the arch up to the curve. The classic Italian Renaissance shape, most common on the front-elevation transoms of Buckhead Georgians and the gabled fronts of Newnan Italianates. Fixed panel with tilting louvers.

Eyebrow Arch

A low gentle curve, less than a half-circle. Common above front entry doors in Druid Hills four-squares and the historic Atlanta Inman Park infill. Fixed panel with louvers tilting on a back tilt rod.

Rake (Angled Top)

An angled flat top, typically following the line of a cathedral ceiling or a clerestory window. Most common in modern Atlanta great rooms and in the Marietta Mid-Century ranches with angled clerestory transoms. Fixed or operable.

Full-Radius (Semicircle)

A complete half-circle arch above a rectangular window. The most demanding shape because the louvers need to align perfectly across the radius. Can be made operable with hinged panels if the wall has clearance.

Half-Round

A standalone semicircle window with no rectangular base. Often found above palladium combinations or as standalone gable-vent windows. Fixed panel with tilting louvers in a sunburst or horizontal pattern.

Octagon & Specialty

Octagonal windows, irregular polygons, and other specialty shapes. Less common but doable; we hand-template each side of the shape and order a custom panel set.

Bay Window Combinations

Bay window combinations with angled side panels (typically 45 or 30 degrees) plus a center panel. Common in Buckhead Georgians and Druid Hills four-squares. We measure each individual opening and order the shutters as a coordinated set.

Hand-Templating Process

We bring a roll of template paper to the consult, trace the arch with a pencil on the inside of the existing opening, label the orientation, and ship that paper to the manufacturer along with the laser measurements. The arch ships back cut to your exact opening, not the theoretical spec.

What arched and palladium shutters cost

Real installed pricing, in 2026 dollars.

+15-35%over standard rectangular shutter pricing

Custom-shape shutters add 15 to 35 percent over the equivalent rectangular shutter for the same material and louver size. A 5-foot wide sunburst arch in basswood with hidden tilt rod typically runs $1,200 to $2,400 per opening. A full-radius half-circle in basswood lands $1,500 to $3,000. An eyebrow arch above an entry door lands $700 to $1,400. Bay window combinations price per panel and the bay-angle hardware adds 10 to 15 percent.

The cost reflects the hand-templating, the manufacturer's per-piece custom programming, and the wood waste from cutting a curve out of a rectangular blank. Book the free in-home measure.

What shapes can you do?

Sunburst, eyebrow, rake, full-radius, half-round, octagon, and irregular custom shapes. Hand-templated on site.
