What custom blinds actually are

The everyday workhorse window treatment, done right.

Custom blinds are horizontal-louvered window treatments built to your exact opening, in real basswood hardwood or engineered faux wood, with cordless lift as the modern default. They are the most-purchased window treatment category in Georgia and Alabama because they are durable, child-safe in the cordless configuration, easy to clean, and the right cost for the bedrooms and bath that do not need the formality of plantation shutters. Real hardwood blinds carry a lifetime warranty on the mechanism; faux wood carries a 25-year slat warranty plus lifetime lift.

The questions people search for: how much do custom blinds cost, faux wood versus real hardwood, are cordless blinds child-safe, can blinds be motorized, what slat width should I pick, do faux wood blinds look cheap, how do I clean my blinds. The short answers: cost runs $14 to $32 per square foot installed. Faux wood for moisture-prone rooms, hardwood for formal and historic; modern faux wood reads as wood from across the room. Cordless is now standard and child-safe (we have not sold corded for child rooms in over a decade). Yes, blinds motorize with Somfy or Lutron. 2-inch slat is the modern default; 1-inch for small bath openings; 2.5-inch for larger estate windows. Faux wood does not look cheap when you spec the right brand (Norman, Graber). Clean with a microfiber duster or a vacuum brush attachment.

We have been answering those questions on Georgia and Alabama porches since 1996. The consult is free, custom stain and paint matching is included, and the warranty paperwork comes with the install.

Materials and options

What you pick from at the consult.

Real Basswood Hardwood

The premium choice for formal living, dining rooms, and historic homes with stained wide trim. Real basswood reads as the truest wood, takes custom stain or paint, and carries a lifetime warranty on the lift mechanism. Hunter Douglas and Norman are our default hardwood partners.

Engineered Faux Wood

For bathrooms, kitchens, sunrooms with steam or splash, and the everyday bedrooms. Will not warp, yellow, or peel in humidity. Modern Norman and Graber faux wood reads as wood from across the room and holds tolerance for the life of the home. 25-year slat warranty, lifetime lift mechanism.

Slat Widths: 1", 2", 2.5"

The 2 inch slat is the modern default for most openings. The 1 inch fits small bath openings, historic transoms, and tight modern minimalist trim. The 2.5 inch carries the scale of larger estate windows and wide horizontal Mid-Century sash. We recommend the slat width at the consult based on the opening proportion.

Cordless Lift, Child-Safe

Cordless is the standard for any bedroom, nursery, or playroom. We have not sold corded lift for child-occupied rooms in over a decade. The cordless mechanism carries the same lifetime warranty as corded, with none of the strangulation risk that the CPSC has cited.

Continuous Loop & Cord Lock

For commercial spaces, large oversized blinds, and wide sliding-door installations where motorization is overkill but a cord makes the lift smoother. We use a tensioned continuous loop or a wall-mounted cord lock per the room application and the relevant safety code.

Motorization

Somfy and Lutron motors for second-story windows, hard-to-reach transoms, and whole-house smart-home integration. Wall switch, RF remote, or app. 6 to 7 year motor warranty on Somfy and Lutron plus 5-year electronics on Lutron. See motorization.

40+ Stains, Unlimited Paint Match

Real hardwood carries over 40 stock stains. Custom stain matching for original trim is included with every order, not an upcharge. Faux wood paint colors run from the standard whites and creams to custom paint matching for builder-grade case molding.

Top-Down / Bottom-Up

The top-down lift drops the top rail without exposing the bottom of the window, which is useful for privacy on street-facing bedrooms while keeping the upper open for light. Available on most cordless faux wood and select hardwood lines.

Below is the real installed range we are quoting for Georgia and Alabama homes.
