About Somfy

The open-platform motor for any shade brand.

Somfy is a French manufacturer founded in 1969 and now the largest tubular motor producer in the world, with over 270 million motors in service globally. The company designs and manufactures motors for interior shading, exterior screens, awnings, rolling shutters, and projection screens. For interior shade applications in Greater Atlanta, Somfy is the motor that most fabricators including Comfortex, Horizons, Lotus, Hartmann and Forbes, and many private-label shade lines spec as their default. That brand-agnostic position is the core reason we recommend Somfy on most multi-brand motorization projects.

We have specified Somfy motors on motorized shade installs since the late 1990s when RTS radio control became the practical standard. The relationship gives us direct technical support, programming assistance for larger installs with channel groups and scenes, and access to the TaHoma smart hub for integration with Alexa, Google Home, and Apple HomeKit. Most of our Buckhead, Sandy Springs, and Alpharetta whole-house motorization projects run Somfy underneath the fabricator's badge, whether the shades themselves are Comfortex Symphony, Horizons natural, or Lotus woven wood.

This page covers the Somfy motor families we spec regularly in Georgia, the warranty terms in plain language, and where Somfy is the right call versus where Hunter Douglas PowerView or Lutron integration would be the better fit. For pricing context, see our motorized shades cost guide for Atlanta.

Warranty and lead time

What the Somfy warranty actually covers.

5-year motor warranty

Somfy interior tubular motors carry a 5-year warranty against manufacturing defects and electrical failure. The warranty period is one of the longest in the category, which is the reason most fabricators spec Somfy as their default motor. Warranty starts on the install date when registered at completion.

Remote and electronics warranty

Telis remotes and wall controls carry a 3-year warranty against manufacturing defects. The TaHoma smart hub carries a 2-year warranty on the hub itself; the cloud subscription that powers app and voice control is free for the life of the product. Rechargeable battery cassettes carry a 2-year warranty.

Lead time and pairing

Somfy motors run inside the shade fabricator's product, so the lead time is the fabricator's lead time plus a few days for motor pairing. For a Comfortex Symphony cellular shade with Sonesse 28 motors, expect 4 to 6 weeks from order to install. Programming and channel setup typically takes 60 to 90 minutes per install crew.

Our workmanship warranty

On top of the Somfy motor warranty, we add our own lifetime workmanship guarantee. If the bracket pulls loose, the channel programming gets corrupted, or the motor needs re-pairing after a power event, we come back and service it. The warranty is for the life of the original purchaser at the original install address.

Questions homeowners ask about Somfy

The honest answers.

Why pick Somfy over Hunter Douglas PowerView or Lutron?

Somfy is the open-platform motor most fabricators spec when the homeowner does not want to be locked into a single brand's ecosystem. Hunter Douglas PowerView is tied to Hunter Douglas product lines; Lutron is tied to Lutron's RA3 or Caseta hub. Somfy motors run inside Comfortex, Horizons, Lotus, and other shade fabricators' product, and integrate with Alexa, Google Home, and Apple HomeKit through the TaHoma hub. For mixed-brand homes, Somfy is usually the cleanest answer.

What is the Somfy motor warranty?

Somfy interior tubular motors carry a 5-year warranty standard. The warranty covers the motor itself against manufacturing defects and electrical failure. Remotes and wall controls carry 3-year warranties; rechargeable battery cassettes carry 2 years. The motor warranty is one of the longest in the category, which is part of why most fabricators spec Somfy as their default motor option.

Which smart home platforms does Somfy work with?

Somfy RTS motors work with Alexa, Google Home, Apple HomeKit, Control4, Crestron, and Savant through the TaHoma smart hub. Newer Zigbee and Z-Wave Somfy motors integrate natively with any Zigbee or Z-Wave hub (Hubitat, SmartThings, Home Assistant) without the TaHoma bridge. We confirm which protocol fits your existing smart home setup at the consultation.

Can existing manual shades be retrofitted with Somfy motors?

Sometimes, depending on the tube diameter and shade construction. Standard 1.5 inch and larger roller tubes can typically be retrofitted with a Somfy Cord Lift adapter or replacement tube. Cellular and Roman shade retrofits are harder and frequently more expensive than buying new motorized shades outright. We assess the existing shades at the consultation and tell you honestly whether retrofit or replacement is the better economic call.
